Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing and More

For this workbook, we are focused on self-publishing. However, it might be helpful to understand the difference between self-publishing and traditional publishing.

The reason this workbook and our others books are self-published is primarily due to the speed of the process and owning the rights to our work.

For those who choose traditional publishing, it may take years to see your book published after going through many rejections and disappointments. Even if your book does get picked up by a traditional publishing house, it is very hard for a first-time author to do well. Traditional publishing houses hesitate to work with a new author due to the author’s inexperience and lack of following. Publishers want to see that the author has a large following, ensuring that when the book is complete, there will be ready and eager customers waiting to buy. Publishing houses do not pay for your marketing, so it’s essential that you have already created a list of people who are interested in your topic in order for a publisher to be interested in your book.

Sometimes a self-published book will get picked up by a traditional publishing house, so self-publishing can be a better way to get your foot in the door, especially if you are successful at selling copies on your own. Entering and winning book contests can also be a way into the traditional publishing arena. Be sure to look for these opportunities. Agents will often ask to work with you if you win a contest. They like to see a proven winner, as they get so many poor-quality books presented to them. The agent also knows they are more likely to have your book picked up by a publishing house when they go to pitch it.

Self-publishing gets your book out to the world in a shorter timeframe. It can also happen with a lot less stress, if you know what you are doing and follow the successful tips of others who have been there before you. It can take up to two years to get your book published traditionally, and it only takes a few months to get your book self-published after it has been edited professionally.

When you self-publish, you retain the rights to your book. On the other hand, the traditional route gives the publisher the rights to your work. As part of giving up your rights to the publishing house, you also give up your ability to have “say-so” in the look of your book (including the book cover and interior layout)—and even what it says (yes, the publisher can change the message of your book in any way they choose). You will have many costs associated with self-publishing, but you have the possibility of earning more too. The amount you earn really depends on your marketing as well as the time you have to invest in promoting it.
